Defra is working towards a sustainable, secure and healthy food supply and leads in Whitehall on food policy. Within an open and competitive market for food and agricultural commodities, we are working across government to ensure fair prices, choice and access to food, as well as continuous improvement in food safety, changes to deliver healthier diets and a more environmentally sustainable food chain.

Highlighting the challenges we face and the policies Government has put in place to achieve our goal of a sustainable, secure and healthy food supply. Includes information on policy responsibilities across Government, indicators, the Council of Food Policy Advisors and delivering our goals in partnership.

Industry
Supporting the food supply chain. This section includes information about competition issues, regional and local food, protected food names, assured food standards, emergency planning and information on a number of sectors.

Environmental impact
Evidence shows that food and drink is one of the areas with the highest impact on climate change for the average household. We are working to address the impact of the food chain on the climate.

Food security
Outlining our policy work in the EU and internationally striving for safe and nutritious food in tandem with food security both at home and abroad.
