Our role

The world is changing and so must the RAF.

With the Cold War over and the emerging threat of global terror, we need to be ready to meet new challenges.

The RAF is becoming a smaller, more dynamic and more flexible force. Although there are fewer bases than before, they are more modern and better equipped to carry out their missions.

To meet the changing times and challenges, and because of the greater capability of technology, the number of people in the RAF has fallen over recent years – to around 41,000. However, this allows us to focus on the staff we have and ensure that they get the very best equipment and training.

What it doesn’t mean is that we’ve stopped recruiting – far from it. We’re continuing to take on new staff right across the RAF. In fact, this is a key part of our vision for the future.

Help us meet the challenges of the future

We see the future of the RAF as encompassing all aspects of operations, including the use of the very latest hi-tech equipment. But the centre of our vision has always been our people – and it always will be. We pride ourselves on attracting the highest quality recruits from all sectors of society. If you join us, you’ll receive first-class training and continuing development to help you meet, or even exceed, your highest aspirations.

You could be part of our world-class team: the RAF of today – and the RAF of tomorrow.
