John Denham wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Christmas is a time of hope and new beginnings. In Britain all of us - not just the Christian community - celebrate a season of goodwill. It is a time for families to celebrate togetherness and look forward to the next year.
It is also a time of thinking of others who are less fortunate than ourselves. A time for the community to come together, when we really see how strong the community spirit is in Britain. Not least in the many selfless acts of charity which people carry out - from buying extra presents, to volunteering in the community: and not forgetting those who on Christmas day will work in vital public services or to support the homeless. It's these acts of kindness which remind us what Christmas is truly about in Britain today.
I would like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
