Royal Engineer Bridging Assets

Some of the Corps of Royal Engineers bridging systems

The Corps of Royal Engineers use a variety of different bridging assets, to span gaps of varying length.

Bridges can be used singularly or in combination depending on the length of gap to be crossed.

Current bridging assets are categorised into three general groups:

Close support Bridging (CSB) assets are mechanically launched bridges that enable gap crossing in the combat zone, with crews protected by armour.

General Support Bridging (GSB) and Logistic Support Bridging (LSB) are a mix of mechanically and hand launched equipment with no armour protection.

Build times for bridges vary from minutes for a Close Support Bridge using the TITAN Armoured Bridge Layer, to several hours for hand built bridges such as the Mabey & Johnson Logistic Support Bridge.
