  • National Guidance for the Provision of Operational Information

The first document to be discussed is: National Guidance for the Provision of Operational Information (PDF, 1199kb, 189 pages)

This guidance looks to assist all Fire and Rescue Services in England by having at their disposal National Guidance to assist them in adopting a common approach to identifying, gathering, analysing, and the subsequent provision of, operational information.

Please comment below or send your suggestions to operationalguidance@communities.gsi.gov.uk. The moderators for this discussion will be Toma Efejuku and Garry Harney.

Re: National Guidance for the Provision of Operational Information

This document goes a long way towards creating a consistent approach to collecting and providing operational guidance for all FRSs, I would like to see this consistent approach extended to include guidance on review/reinspection frequencies for sites/premises where operational data is held.

In particular it would seem wrong to allocate the same reinspection frequency to a building with one very high severity/likelihood score as for one where several very high scores appear.

Thank you for your comments on the consultation on National Guidance for Operational Risk Information. Alongside the consultation exercise we are also undertaking a practical review of the guidance, with seven FRS’s actually trialling the 'POISE' model.

This trial has recently ended and the results, together with the comments resulting from the formal consultation, will be reviewed in early December. Please be assured that all the comments received, together with the results of the trials, will be taken into account during that review.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Advisory Unit supports the provision of the Guidance as a means for allowing individual services flexibility to deal with operational issues in an appropriate manner within their own IRMP while setting a framework for crucial national matters.  In particular the issue of inter-service compatibility regarding all operational matters is vitally important.  However, it is equally important that the same degree of compatibility exists among all English Regions and devolved administrations.

Re: National Guidance for the Provision of Operational Information

The Guidance is definitely one step forward to standardize the Fire and Rescue Services nationwide. The POISE section has plenty of useful flow diagrams, graphics, and illustrations.

I'd like to see a little bit more content on the following subjects:

    1. In the events of a terrorist nuclear attack, a biochemical attack, what's the standard procedures in Fire and Rescue.

    2. More specific on communications procedures between local fire/rescue team and other law enforcement agencies, in a large scale event

    3. Standardize information system, and sharing of information.

    4. Use social networks to communicate with public in a event.

Re: National Guidance for the Provision of Operational Information

Laren you make some every good points, particularly looking at the social media aspect and the standardisation of information systems. I am not sure if you are aware of data.gov.uk but many on there are of the same opinion as you in terms of data and looking at ways of utilising public data and making the most of the information.

I think government bodies are getting much better at moving with the times and I agree it is so important especially in times of crisis to be able to communicate with everyone on a single medium very quickly and social media allows this.
