The NHS is legally bound to follow set guidelines concerning complaints and consent from patients and research subjects.
The Department of Health has produced guidance on the complaints procedure for the NHS and local social services. Information for patients on how to complain about the NHS is included. There is also information on the process of complaints reform, and for NHS staff on complaints handling training.
The 2000 NHS Plan pledges that proper consent must be sought from all NHS patients and research subjects. To achieve this goal, the Department of Health set up the Good Practice in Consent initiative and enlisted an advisory group made up of patient representatives, carers, clinicians, academics and NHS managers.
