But because of its heavy fat content, escolar can, if not prepared properly or if eaten in large quantities, have a laxative effect causing stomach cramps and diarrhoea. The Agency is updating its health warning about methanol-contaminated counterfeit vodka. Four cases of S. Petersbourg vodka were seized from off-licences in the Holloway area of north London, last week. The ready meals market has grown considerably in recent years. Total sales in the UK were valued at £1.78 billion in 2001, up 46% on 1997. Ready meals include: chilled (53% of the value of retail sales); frozen (40%); and room temperature (7%) – including instant hot snacks.

A Food Standards Agency survey of artificial colourings in soft drinks reveals that although 98% of the soft drinks tested did not contain any artificial colourings above the permitted limit, four had more than the maximum permitted level for individual artificial colours. Eight local authorities across the country have reported complaints about this product, which comes in a 60 ml container like a roll-on deodorant. Specified risk material (SRM) has been found in a consignment of beef from the Republic of Ireland. SRM is that part of the animal most likely to contain BSE infectivity.
