Promoting school food policy
Thursday 13 May 2010
The Agency has been working in partnership with the School Food Trust and the National Governors' Association to provide advice for schools to help them develop policies on healthier packed lunches and school food policies in general.
Packed lunches
The School Food Trust, with the help of Healthy Schools and the Food Standards Agency, has developed a toolkit that outlines six steps to successfully developing and implementing a healthy packed lunch policy.
This also includes three menus aimed at primary school children, each with three weeks of lunch ideas. These packed lunch menus are compliant with the food- and nutrient-based standards for school lunches. You can find out more on the School Food Trust website below.
Advice for school governors
In partnership with the National Governors' Association the Agency has published guidance to help school governors develop food policies for their schools. 'Food policy in schools – a strategic policy framework for governing bodies' takes governors step by step through actions they can take and provides practical advice for governing bodies on how to tackle all aspects of food in school, from school lunches to vending machines.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families (now the Department of Education), the School Food Trust and National Healthy Schools were all involved in its development.
You can find 'Food policy in schools' below, along with a report of its evaluation.
