Glass maker fined for lead contamination at factory

A Black Country glass maker has been fined £3,600 after its premises were found to be contaminated by lead.

An unannounced HSE inspection of the site at Pedmore Road Industrial Estate in Brierley Hill found the levels of lead contamination to be above the occupational exposure limit.

Construction giant fined £160k after man falls to his death

A major construction firm has been fined £160,000 after a labourer fell to his death while building Premier League side Everton FC’s new training academy.

Karl Davis, who was married and lived in Wallasey, was working on the first floor of a building on the Finch Lane site in Halewood when a guardrail gave way and he fell out of an open window frame.

Textile company fined after worker’s arm crushed in roll of fabric

A fabric manufacturer has been fined after a worker’s arm was so badly crushed he had to have metal plates inserted to help support his broken bones.

Agency worker Robert Dunn, 32, of Ringwood, South Bretton, Peterborough, was operating a fabric winding machine on 4 November 2009 when his left arm was drawn into the roll of material and crushed, breaking all three arm bones. He also suffered ripped cartilage in his left knee, caused by the sudden movement.

Port authority and shipping company fined £185,000 after drowning

A Sussex port and an Italian shipping company have today been fined a total of £185,000 for health and safety failings after a worker drowned at Newhaven Docks.

Croydon Crown Court heard today that the Sardina Vera ferry, which was owned by Forship S.p.a, had docked at Newhaven late on 12 January 2005 when the incident happened.

Safe and Healthy Workplace Maintenance (a European Health and Safety Week event)

Enterprise Europe Yorkshire, in association with the Bradford Area Occupational Health and Safety Forum, is organising a free event in Bradford, to mark European Health and Safety Week.

The theme of the Week this year is “Safe and Healthy Workplace Maintenance”. It forms part of a two year-long campaign by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (OSHA) to highlight the risks associated with maintenance activities in the workplace.

Majority of local authorities satisfy asbestos management rules in ’system build’ schools

The majority of local authorities in England with ’system build’ schools have procedures and precautions in place to manage asbestos safely, according to a survey and follow-up inspection programme.

Of the 152 councils in England that have responsibility for providing education, 110 satisfied HSE, via an online survey, that they have systems in place to meet their duties under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.

Husband and wife fined over gas safety breaches

A couple who were co-landlords of a Bristol property have been fined after admitting breaching gas safety regulations.

Atulkulmar Ratilal Patel, 55, and Chetna Atulkulmar Patel, 51, of Beaufort Street, Brynmawr, Gwent, were fined a combined total of £6,500 and ordered to pay costs of £1,800 at Bristol Magistrates’ Court today.

Prestwich firm fined after putting lives at risk

A home improvement company has admitted breaking a health and safety law after a worker was seen on a house roof with nothing in place to stop him falling.

Viewline Northwest Ltd was prosecuted by HSE after inspectors saw the man working on the roof of a home in Timperley on 16 September last year while standing on a platform with no guardrail.

Manufacturer fined over former soldier’s death

A building materials manufacturer and its director have been fined a total of £20,000 after a former soldier was killed by an industrial mixing machine blade.

HSE prosecuted Bury-based Building Chemical Research (1984) Ltd (BCR) and company director Stuart Reich, 62, following Paul Palmer’s death at the company’s premises on Sion Street in Radcliffe.
