This month's hot topics:
General advice:
We are a law enforcement agency responsible for around forty
Acts of parliament, and over one thousand associated regulations
which have an impact on practically all aspects of life, from the
safety of children's toys to the honesty of property descriptions
when buying a home. We investigate "clocked" cars and the welfare
of farm animals. Whether you are buying a loaf of bread, a pint of
beer or arranging credit, the department is responsible for
ensuring that sales are carried out within the law.
We are committed to helping responsible businesses by providing
a wide range of information and guidance to help you understand the
law and how it applies to you. Whether you are a new business
trying to find your way through the sometimes bewildering array of
legislation, or whether you are an established business looking to
expand and diversify, we can help, and can point you in the
direction of other sources of help and information if
necessary. Business in Cornwall are welcome to contact us on
0300 1234 191 or by using our online contact form.
Consumer advice in Cornwall is now provided by Consumer Direct.
Consumer Direct is a telephone and online consumer advice
service which works in partnership with Cornwall Council's Trading
Standards Service and is supported by the Government.
If you would like advice about something you have bought you can
complain to Consumer Direct by telephoning 08454 04 05 06.
This is the national number that is answered by any one of seven
Consumer Direct centres around the country. The advice is
free but calls will cost up to 4p a minute from a landline number
(although the calls may be free if included in your call
package with your phone supplier). For continuity of service
that will ensure you always deal with the South-West centre which
based in Camborne, you may wish to use a special landline number:
01209 720 333. Normal call charges will
apply – this is NOT a premium rate number. You can also email
Consumer Direct for free advice, via the Direct.Gov Get advice
about a problem with goods or services webpage.
If you've bought goods or services, you can find out your rights
and when you can get a repair, replacement or refund from the
Directgov Consumer Rights webpages.
