Green Paper for Culture

The consultation has now been analysed, and a summary is available below.

Overall, we had 326 responses through the survey, in depth responses submitted by individuals and organisations and other feedback through consultation events. The bulk of the response endorsed the overall direction proposed by the Green Paper for Culture. There was also a wealth of ideas, offers of support and suggestions which are being incorporated in the plans for the White Paper.

Timetable

The time table for producing a White Paper has shifted slightly. We are now working towards issuing the White Paper in the autumn.

Why are we producing a White Paper for Culture?

Our rich cultural heritage and strong sense of identity provide amazing opportunities to make Cornwall a great place to live, visit or invest. As the second largest unitary authority in England, and the largest employer in Cornwall, we have a responsibility to provide strategic leadership, using our power, resource and influence to protect and grow Cornwall’s cultural assets. This leadership will become more critical as we ride out a period of recession and public sector funding cuts. But even with strong leadership, we cannot protect or develop the cultural assets of Cornwall alone. We need the cultural sector, community and stakeholders to pull together to address the key challenges and to make the most of new opportunities.

The Green Paper for Culture published in September 2010 set out the rationale and framework for a five year culture programme for Cornwall, inviting comment from funding partners, the cultural sector (organisations and individuals), businesses and the wider community. With your responses and ideas we can now set about putting together some specific proposals for Cornwall that are likely to have widespread support which will be published in a White Paper.

We are committed to working in partnership with the whole sector and our communities to develop Cornwall’s cultural offer and particularly value your contributions in helping to develop definitive proposals and propositions.

This has been a significant opportunity to have your say in expanding on Cornwall’s already rich cultural heritage and further developing its strong sense of identity. We thank you again for your contributions.
