More choice for users: unlisted videos
Melinda teaches high school in the Bay Area and recently reached out to us with a problem. Her students just finished a video history project that she wanted to share with their parents and classmates. But she was concerned about posting the videos publicly because she didn’t want the whole world to find them (frankly, neither did her students). Melinda told us YouTube’s private sharing options -- a 25-person cap that’s limited to other YouTube users -- didn’t work for her. She needed a better option to privately share her students’ talent.
Later today, we'll be rolling out a new choice that will help Melinda and other people like her: unlisted videos. [Update: Unlisted videos are now available.]
With this feature, you can mark your videos as "unlisted." This means only people who have the link to the video will be able to watch it. It won’t appear in any of YouTube’s public pages, in search results, on your personal channel or on the browse page. It’s a private video, except you don’t need a YouTube account to watch it and there is no limit to the number of people who can view it. You’ll get a link when you upload the video and then it’s up to you to decide who to share it with. Unlisted is the perfect option for that class project, video from last summer’s family reunion or your secret Broadway audition tape.
Just remember, the video can be viewed by anyone with the link, so only give it to people you trust! For more information, check out our Help Center page.

This is one of the best and long need feature that YouTube has released. Alot of users will find this feature very useful. This feature will be great for users with interactive annotations videos (annotations games, etc.).
One feature that I'd like to see is quick editing of uploaded videos.
Users would be able to edit a video title without having to click the "Edit" button. From the "My Videos" page or from the video watch page, users would simply click on the video title and the field will become editable (similar to how you rename photos in flickr). The same feature would apply to video description and tags.
Another quick edit feature would be to be able to make a video private/public/hide from the "My Videos" page.
I am not seeing this option yet for videos that has already been uploaded.
Another feature I'd like to see concerns the search results.
In the search results, the entire video description is not visible. I'd like to see a "more..." button next to the video description. Clicking "more..." will expand the video description so that the entire description is visible.
I have found three new features that got rolled out today.
1. On the comments section of a video, the time a comment was posted is now under the user who posted it.
2. Hovering the titles of videos in the modules "Recommended for You", "Recent Activity", "Featured Videos", etc. , a small part of a video's description would appear.

3. When you are watching a video, and before liking/disliking it, the results of people that liked/disliked it are now appeared next to the like/dislike options.
So yeah, I've been spotting features. ;) What do you guys think of all the features we, me and the users above, have found?
I do not have this option to unlist my videos.
My account is in not good standing and in good standing.
In 2006 I uploaded a video that was copyrighted and it was taken down. It shows Account Status: Copyright. Your account is not in good standing.
Then I have Account Status: Community Guidelines. Your account is in good standing.
My username is movie3891. It is unfair that I do not have the option to unlist. I only have 11 videos and I do not upload copyright videos on a regular basis. I doesn't make sense for me to create a new account just to obtain this feature.
I wished YouTube would post a blog to announce new features before new features are released. It gives us something to look foward to.
I needed this so much. I tried to share a private video today with just my friends but they needed to have a YT account so safe for the unlisted feature
Another placebo change, how about giving the users REAL choice over MORE things than just video upload?
How many percent of the users actually do upload more than 2-3 videos?
And how many need this function?
Now think about how many people want the old design back!
Give them the option to do THAT, instead of posting shit announcements like this, trying to create the illusion of giving users more choice.

Seeing as you're on a mission to make things fairer and give us all more choice, how about giving us ALL an option to use Custom Video Thumbnails? Please, Google. Make it happen! Thank you. ;-)
Besides, if someone uses a really explicit video thumbnail, they can simply be flagged for it. No worries.
It works, however the only way to ensure complete privacy is omit names of people. The internet is a public forum, and theoretically it is possible to track information back to the source

Dont show before liking/disliking it, the results of people that liked/disliked it will give people to go with what the other people say not its own choose.
Also bring online video editing.
Very, VERY good idea. I often have projects requiring video clips, and because of their high sizes (I shoot in HD), I have trouble not only getting it to class, but playing it off a USB on their low-budget computers.
This solution is PERFECT. Upload the video at home, get the link, stream it at school.

My unlist feature is not available. It is greyed out.
On the help page I see that those with an account not in good standing will not have this feature.
My first and last copyright violation was in 2006.
I get the reason for not allowing those with copyright violations to have this feature (the videos can be unlisted and embeded on another site to be seen by an audience greater than 25 or a link can be given to more than 25 people). However, I am not one of those users who uploads copyrighted content constantly or on regular basis (such as TV shows, movies, etc.). In fact I have only 11 videos and probably upload a video once or twice per year. I do not plan on using the unlist feature anytime soon but if I ever need this feature, it would be useful.
I've noticed that the comments section on the video watch page has been fixed. It looks great. Are there plans to indent replies to comments? What about highlighting the uploader's comments in yellow?
One sugestion I have is that the "View all comments" button should be placed closer to the page number buttons (maybe underneath).

Hi, is there a venue to ask more techincal questions?
It's clear that a decision was made to not have threaded comments, but is there any chance a you could at least add a parentid attribute to comments list items? - it would give users the opportunity to easily extend the page through greasemonkey if they so wish.
I´d like to see the links come back on YouTube...it is nice to know who uses ones videos on their blogs!

You shouldn't be surprised that YouTube updated the comment page. About a month ago, YouTube posted on the community help forum and listed what they planned to do with the video page and comments section. Here is a copy and paste of that post by YouTube:

*** "View all" not hidden on page 2 -- this was a bug and not the intended design

Jonny Paula - just like traditional "private" videos, it's pushed to subscribers based on upload time, and not when you hit "public". If you flip it to public 6 hours after you upload it, then it'll show up as "6 hours ago" in everyone's subscription boxes.
It'd be cool to do it the opposite way, though.

movie3891 - yeah, lots of changes to comments section based on folks' feedback. I'm loving it, personally.
Re: "Broadcast Yourself" - removed it from the top of the page in order to free up room. But still used elsewhere on the site, e.g. in the < title > that's shown at the top of your browser / within a tab's header.

This is a much better feature than the private option. I wish more people read this blog so they knew how much YT is trying to accommodate it's users, even if its one little thing at a time. Can't wait to try it!

what's so new about unlisted?
thatdutchlad - the previous "limited access URL" feature had the limitation of a) you still needed a YT account to view them, and b) a 25 person limit. Unlisted videos don't have those restrictions.
We love embedding YouTube videos in our private WordPress sites, but the Unlisted videos don't show up (just the url as text). The settings for the videos are set to allow embedding. Any ideas? Otherwise, a great feature for a bit of privacy for class projects. Thanks.

I would like to browse youtube with no problems, but it seems with the new layout many features are just messed up!
The old was better. Although i am used to work on the new layout, but the old at least had no deffictiveness.
Byron - oEmbeds and some other custom embeds don't work at the moment since the API doesn't yet fully support unlisted videos. We're working on that. You can still embed them for now if you copy/paste the embed code manually from the video page.
I like this feature it allows a select few people to see the video before releasing it to the general public without having to create a YouTube account.

Future, if possible:
1. to upload a jpeg/gif/png/etc for video thumbnail
2. to re-upload a corrected video to replace one w/o losing view count
I don't think replacing audio to an existing video will do much good, particularly for those who might not realize sync issues would foul up their previous upload. You'd be inviting millions of pissed-off user comments.
But #1 and 2 are decent requests, I think.

suggestions/opinions....i have done research and read forums, but thought I'd ask a question...
what do you guys think about my uploaded videos like wise with everyone elses where I want to replace them because of updated versions of them, you think youtube will make that feature an option sooner or later? I have already taken down a few videos just a few days after uploading then uploaded them again... altho views to me just tells me who is actually finding my stuff on youtube, my views weren't much before i re-uploaded. Should I wait because I have about 20 some vids that need to be updated for a newer look.

Can videos that have been uploaded to the Unlisted category still be flagged?
It really wouldn't do much good for anyone, but I could see people doing it anyway just to annoy the uploader. And that could be pain.
And this is a pretty cool feature. I don't think I'll ever use it, but it's cool. :D

Suggestions for added features to Private videos...
1. Add a box with the option to share with "Friends" of the selected viewers.
2. As above for "Friends of Friends"
3. As above for "Subscribers" of selected viewer.
Facebook already has features like this where you can show you personal info, photos etc to various classes or ranks of related persons.
How about the feature to see the thumbs up ratio before you click on the video? So then I don't waste my time clicking on one part of a movie to find out that it takes me to a website that is filled with viruses and that 2,000 people gave it thumbs down with only 200 thumbs up. That is the only feature I really have to complain about even though I hate the new youtube,that was the only feature worth ranting about.
I think it's a clever idea, because it stops noobs and paedos from finding out about these kind of videos (well, I wouldn't find it funny if some person took me, so stop laughing at paedos.)

Now, I understand that you guys at Youtube can get sued and what not if you just allow us to put music on our videos that we do not own. Fine. But you guys should at least license more music for the Swap Sound feature for us to use. I mean right now I only see like 3 good songs, and they get old after the hundredth time of listening to them. So, I feel the library needs to be updated. Why are we not able to use Vevo music? Aren't you guys partnered with them?

personally youtube is more for watching then for uploading, I mean unless you have some super great non copy righted stuff that you know people are going to watch, other wise it can be handful for some, I know I know people often upload there personal videos and other stuff here, but in reality much like on tv either you have stuff people are going to watch or you dont, or just using it to save storage or for personal stuff other then that youtube mostly just good for watching videos.
Is this feature available on videos that have already once been on there as public? I changed to unlisted and it still finds them when i search for them.
Highly excellent! This is exactly what I've needed. I mean really, does anyone else in the world care about the video I took at the cookout on Sunday afternoon ... except for the people who were there? Also, my friends won't get all bent out of shape over "posting their image all over the Internet" now. Yes, it's still "out there", but it's not randomly available.

I'd like to be able to give access to some of my YouTube videos only if they get to the YouTube video from a particular web page from my site (e.g. perhaps by using "HTTP Referer" when deciding to display the video. Is there a way to configure that?
