Waste Exemptions

  • What is a waste exemption?
Usually any waste treatment, recovery or disposal operation needs to be authorised by a permit. A waste exemption is a very specific type of low risk waste handling operation that does not require a permit. Most exemptions need to be registered, usually by us.

  • New waste exeptions
New regulations changing waste exemptions were introduced on 6 April 2010. They affect the types of waste operation that are exempt and the rules which control them.

  • Old waste exemptions
Under the old system exemptions were known as simple or complex and you can find guidance on them here. You can also renew any complex exemptions that have a twelve month expiry period and which are due to expire.

  • Low risk waste
We recognise that waste industry regulation should be proportionate to risk. We have therefore been working to target activities that have a greater potential for harming the environment or human health.

  • Exempt waste operations moving to environmental permits
Some waste operations will no longer benefit from an exemption especially those involving higher quantities of waste and will require a permit.
