Why we are here
A very warm welcome to the RAF Scampton Website.
For those of you who are posted here may I wish you a most enjoyable tour at this historic Station based north of the city of Lincoln. If you are a visitor to our site, please feel free to look around and learn a little of what we do and how we fit into our local community.
RAF Scampton has a long and proud history as an operational Station and the current activities of its personnel match those of their predecessors. The Unit acts as ‘parent’ to 4 ‘lodgers’: Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (RAFAT), No 1 Air Control Centre (1ACC), Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) Scampton, and the Mobile Meteorological Unit (MMU). Together these independent units deliver a significant operational and defence diplomacy output. A key mission of the CRC and No 1 ACC is to provide Air Command and Control in defence of the United Kingdom’s airspace. Moreover, No 1 ACC possesses the ability to provide this service anywhere in the world. A more visible, and audible, demonstration of our presence in Lincolnshire is that of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, or Red Arrows. RAF Scampton is the home of this world-famous aerobatic team and they make full use of the Unit and the surrounding airspace in their preparations for their annual Display Season. Finally, we are home to the majority of the RAF MMU, a Reserve Force Unit whose role is to provide meteorological (weather) services to Armed Forces personnel on operations throughout the world.
In addition to playing a major role in the RAF the Station has an equally important task in its local community of North Lincolnshire. Since re-opening in 2005 we have become a significant employer in the locality providing technical and highly skilled employment opportunities for many local people. This bond is further strengthened by the Station being granted the freedom of Lincoln and having the opportunity to march through the city streets once a year. We are currently a geographically unique station in that we are based at 2 sites, 15 miles apart. The main site is easily found just north of Lincoln on the A15. The second is at Kirton in Lindsay where we have reclaimed the historic RAF station from the Army and ensconced No 1 ACC there.
So, ‘why are we here?’; we are here to further the defence mission of the Royal Air Force both in the United Kingdom and overseas by helping to project air-power wherever it is needed.
