I’ve gained a whole new skill set in ammunition maintenance, repair and disposal. My first tour was to Northern Ireland, and I’ve since learned about Biological and Chemical Munition Disposal (BCMD), demolition, and how to design and build ammunition depots. I’ve been to Canada, Belize, Cyprus, Kenya and Afghanistan, and I now hope to do the High Threat Operator course so I can carry out bomb disposal duties in Afghanistan.

This is the rank most soldiers start out at. You still get all the benefits of Army life, like a good rate of basic pay, free healthcare and subsidised food and accommodation. You’re not in charge of anyone, so you can focus on using your skills. Every promotion after this gets you extra pay.
