We can search the NMR's photographs, documents and other records for you using either the free enquiry service, or the priority search or research service (see details below). If you're then interested in any of the material we find you can order copies.
Free Enquiry Service
The NMR offers a free enquiry service to answer simple questions. Complete the online enquiry form if you'd like to know:
- which archaeological sites we have records for a specified area
- what air photographs we hold for a specified area
- what photographs or documents we hold on a single building
Our specialist team will search the archive for you and let you know what we find. Free enquiries are answered on a first come, first served basis. We aim to reply within three weeks, but it may take longer during busy periods.
Priority Search Service
A priority search service is available if you need a search done quickly. A fee is charged for this service. We'll send you the details of what we find by first-class post, within two working days of receiving your enquiry. All response times are subject to receiving your enquiry before noon.
Research Service
If your question doesn't fit easily within the scope of our free search service (perhaps you are interested in a number of sites or in a building type), you can use our research service, where we'll carry out research for you. A fee is normally charged per hour. We’ll contact you before carrying out a search to tell you the fee. Due to limited staff resource, we may not be able to carry out very complex or voluminous requests.
For our current Priority and Research Service fees and costs of copies of photographs, reports etc. please see our price list and please read our terms and conditions.
