Teacher training

Parliament’s Education Service provides a range of support and training opportunities for teachers of citizenship, political literacy and politics. All outreach sessions are:

  • Free of charge
  • Available across the UK
  • Linked to citizenship aspects of the curriculum

Our staff are experienced education providers and former teachers with a wide range of specialist knowledge.

For more information on any of our training programmes, please contact our outreach team.

Teacher seminar days

One day training events held at Westminster are available throughout the year.

Citizenship days are open to any teacher who wants to broaden their general knowledge about Parliament, and get ideas for teaching political literacy within citizenship and general studies.

Specialist days are more suited to those teaching subjects such as politics and will focus in depth on more specific topics.

Training in schools

Professional development opportunties can be delivered in your school or local area. Please note school-based training is currently only available outside Greater London.

Stand-alone sessions

Aimed at both primary and secondary teachers across the UK, sessions focus on practical methods of active learning, participation and engagement.

Full day, half day or twilight sessions are available, and training sessions can also be tailored on request. Sessions are available for groups of teachers within individual schools or colleges, for clusters of schools within an area, or in partnership with the local authority.

Workshop-based sessions

These sessions are intended to support teachers in developing political literacy lessons, and include up to a half day of activity sessions for students in school. The activity sessions are delivered as exemplars to help teachers bring Parliament alive in school, and teachers are expected to take an active part in these sessions.

A dedicated teacher training session will also be included within the visit.

Workshop-based training is available for teachers of ages 7 – 18. Student activity sessions can be aimed at whole year groups, assemblies or specialist subject focus days. Topics cover a wide range of themes, ranging from how Parliament works to debating, voting and elections. All sessions focus on active learning and participation.
